Tireless performers rocked a version of the song alf layla wa layla (1001 nights), made famous by Umm Kulthum, on the bus ride after a gig in Helwan. Featuring Lillie Gordon on violin and Giselle Garcia as Umm Kulthum.

The University of California Middle East Ensemble

The UCSB Middle East Ensemble is an official "Ethnomusicology Performance Ensemble" in the University of California at Santa Barbara's Department of Music. Begun in 1989 by ethnomusicology professor Scott Marcus, the ensemble has performed and given workshops throughout California (Los Angeles, San Diego, Pasadena, Berkeley, Sacramento, etc.) and also in Arizona and Virginia at schools, colleges, academic conferences, public festivals, and community events. Quarterly concerts at UCSB's 468-seat Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall are regularly "sold out" events. In Fall, 1999, seven members of the ensemble gave a number of performances in the Central Asian country of Uzbekistan, as the sole U.S. representatives at the International "Melodies of the East" Festival in the city of Samarkand.

The ensemble's repertoire reflects the great variety of cultures found in the Middle East. The ensemble performs music and dance from Arab, Turkish, Persian, Armenian, Greek, Sephardic, and Assyrian cultures. Performance items range from classical pieces to religious, folk, popular, and children's songs, as well as folk dances, classical, and cabaret-style dances.
